Having an opportunity to travel and see the world is an awesome experience. Lifetime memories are made from all the places we visit and the things we get to see and do. A dream trip can turn into a nightmare when you become ill and especially if the illness is unusual or untreatable.

Some questions I have been asked are: How can we prepare ourselves for travel to the far corners of the globe and stay healthy? What immunizations and vaccinations do I need? How do I know what I should be concerned about? Who keeps track of the various health threats around the world? How can our public health department help us prepare? How does the CDC keep us informed?

On Saturday we will ask Dr. Linda Bell, an Epidemiologist with South Carolina to answer some questions and help us understand preparing for travel and how we can stay healthy away from home. Dr. Bell has a BS in Molecular Biology from the University of Texas at Austin and earned her Medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas. Dr. Bell trained in internal medicine and completed an appointment as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Office with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Dr. Bell has worked in public health practice for the past 20 years focusing on the control of communicable diseases. She has served in several positions with the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control including Medical Consultant, Director of the Division of Acute Disease Epidemiology and Director of Clinical Services. Dr. Bell is currently the South Carolina State Epidemiologist.

Also on hand to answer questions and help us understand the Ebola outbreak, will be our very on Doc Bill to answer the question: what is Ebola and how does it spread? Stay tuned for the whole show because we’ll also answer questions that will help ease your concerns and feel better about your next trip.
