Upon A Hilltop – The Reagan Presidential Library and Museum

Reagan Presidental

The Reagan Presidential Library – Presidental libraries are unique places.  They are not like the libraries we think of with rows of books and tables where you can research documents or search computer files.  Presidental libraries are places to document and maintain the historic events during the terms of each president.  Each library captures not only the history of each presidency but also the personal style and personality of the President and first family.

I recently had an opportunity to visit the Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, California. I discovered I was just one of more than 5 million visitors since the museum’s opening in 1991.The extensive library is 100,000 square feet with 24 different galleries, capturing the life of Ronald Reagan from his childhood to an outstanding college career, a radio announcer and his stardom as a Hollywood actor.  It’s all captured.  Highlighted are the steps to becoming involved in politics and becoming Governor of California, meeting first lady Nancy and successfully running for the office of President of the United States.  The museum holds photos, videos, artifacts, historic documents and exhibits providing a walking down memory lane, reminding us of the events during the term as 40th President of the U.S.A.

A stunning location with a spectacular view perched on a mountaintop overlooking a valley, the Pacific ocean, and green pastures. Peace and tranquillity are all around, with beautiful roses and green lawns. Very relaxing along the 100 acres just 45 minutes from Los Angeles.

The museum and library are also the final resting place for both President Reagan and first lady Nancy Reagan.

Some of the highlights for me – were:

Air Force One Pavillion –
– where I had lunch under Air Force One – a 707 aircraft  – the actual aircraft which carried President Reagan to 26 countries and 46 states over more than 660,000 miles.

Popular exhibit and you can go inside the aircraft.

Official motorcade

The automobile used in the official motorcade.

You can see that it was truly the Flying White House.
The Air Force One Pavilion also includes a Presidential Motorcade and Marine One helicopter

Another favorite was seeing an actual piece of the Berlin Wall

A piece of the Berlin Wall.

Reproduction of the Oval Office

Reproduction of President Reagan’s Oval Office with personal artifacts.

And, a reproduction of the Oval office during his time – filled with western art, bronze saddles. And of course,! They were all around – he loved them!

And, of course, there are the many gifts he and Nancy received while in the white house.
