Is there really any such thing – tips that make travel with kids smooth?
Here are a few tips that will help make flying with children easier and less turbulent.
1. Packing
– Bring a small backpack with toys, treats and books
– Avoid those bags with wheels – they topple over and can become frustrating for everyone – starting with the child
– Load their bag with “grown up” things – wipes, tissues. This helps them feel grown up and independent and frees your bag for more things too.
– Pack an extra pair of clothing
– Bring plastic bags for soiled clothing
2. Prior to Boarding
– Check and double check your seats and make sure they are together. Seats C & D are across the aisle. Make sure you understand where the seat letters are located.
– Walk around with your child before boarding – get the restless energy out before boarding
– Make a potty stop before boarding
– Take advantage of pre-boarding offered by the airline – this allows for more time to get onboard, get settled and comfortable
– Ask for a stroller tag if you’re traveling with one
– Keep tickets, boarding passes and travel documents in a convenient spot inside your carry-on bag.
3. During the flight
– Keep medicines, toys, treats and wipes in a bag under the seat in front of you. Do not put them in the overhead.
– Bring iPad/tablets if children enjoy electric games. Books and toys work well during flight too
– Before the flight have a conversation about public space – no kicking seats, pushing seat backs or running up/down the aisles.
4. Food
– Bring enough snacks for the whole trip – checking in, waiting in line for TSA, before boarding, during the flight and when you arrive.
– If you’re traveling with more than one child, bring separate snacks for each child – you do not want fighting over treats
– Avoid sticky, messy, crumbly food
– Bring spill proof cups, paper towels, wet wipes or face towels
– Pack checking or sucking candies especially for landing when ear may hurt

Individually packaged snacks stay fresh and allow you to provide measured amounts of food during the trip.
5. Toys and Games
– Bring simple toys without many pieces and parts
– Favorite books and games are always a good idea as well as new toys and games to make the trip feel special
– Stickers and notebooks are great busy toys.
– Look for books about travel and the destination where you are traveling

Don’t forget electrical adapters for tablets – you’ll want to keep the fun going while waiting in international airports.
6. Take off and Landing
– Let the child sit by the window to look outside
– Ears may hurt during landing – chew gum, suck hard candies
– Allow other passengers to disembark if you need help – ask for assistance. The crew will be happy to help
