Holy Cow! – It’s BBQ

The unmistakable aroma of BBQ crowds the air with familiar smells of smoked and grilled delights. I am in Los Angeles, but my senses say I’m back in Georgia. One thing I know is good BBQ and with mouth-watering curiosity I head straight toward the recognizable scent and hopefully a satisfying lunch. On my way I meet Elizabeth a new friend who tells me I should try the new restaurant in the area. “They have great baked beans!” and she points to a building with the name Holy Cow. Perfect, that’s just where I’m heading. IMG_3166 With a swing of the door and a whiff of Southern yumminess, I am at the desk ready to order. The menu packed with catchy names like “Between the Bread”, “Good & Green”, “Scratch sides” – brings joy and anticipation.

Between the bread offers a great smoked pulled pork sandwich call “The Hog”. With Carolina sauce, slaw, crispy onions on a brioche bun – it taste like a delicious summer cookout – and all for just $10.

I added a scratch side of collards slowly braised with vinegar, ham hocks and pork belly – am I back in Georgia? Can you say  “so, so good?” And, trying the mac & cheese with Vermont white and yellow cheddar with Gruyere and béchamel transforms this down-home favorite into a gourmet dish.

menu is filled with creative twists to southern favorites: Fried cornbread, sweet potatoes, pickled beets, roasted corn chowder and many more creative choices. Southern delights have made their way to Brentwood! When visiting the Los Angeles area, it is definitely worth a visit and a delicious way to whet your southern appetite.   Holy Cow 264 26th Street Santa Monica, CA Holycowbbq.com
