Ideal destinations for going unplugged

In a world now saturated with technology, an unplugged vacation may seem unthinkable. We have come to rely upon our social media accounts not only as an entertaining distraction but also as a major connection to our friends, family and work. While those connections are valuable, it is important to make time for breaks from our phones and computers.

Too much time spent hunched over a screen can lead to neck and back problems, a struggle to focus and even an increase in stress. Our brains need a chance to recharge and strengthen so that we can use technology to our advantage. Luckily, there are destinations all over the world designed for going unplugged.

Located in the southern Caribbean, St. Vincent and Grenadines covers 32 beautiful islands of white sand beaches surrounded by crystal blue waters. Tropical rainforests, coral reefs and lagoons sound like the perfect getaway and distraction from the urge to check your phone or computer. Rent your own private yacht, or take a charter yacht to explore the islands. Go scuba diving and swim alongside seahorses, colorful mollusks and manta rays. Hike to the top of a volcano or along a scenic coastal path. And if the transition to unplugged is too difficult, a digital detox retreat package is available. Guests hand in their technology for the entire trip and are given a guidebook on how to “de-tech.” For more information, visit discovervsg.com.

Utah’s Red Mountain Resort encourages its guests to “recharge everything but their electronics.” Take in the unique landscape of the desert bluffs with guided hikes, mountain biking and rappelling. Even if you are not an outdoorsy type, the resort offers spa treatments, acupuncture, pottery workshops and excursion add-ons. The emotional fitness add-on with expert Andrea Hanson gives guests a chance to harness their energy, develop meditations and yoga practices and learn about healthy habits. Unknown-1Along the Outaouias River, halfway between Ottawa and Montreal, is Kenauk Nature, one of North America’s largest and longest-established fishing and game reserves. The reserve’s chalets are located alongside the river and they seem like the perfect family getaway. The chalets are fully equipped with kitchens and barbeque grills, and chefs can be contacted for gourmet meals. Beyond the cabin, activities range from fishing and canoeing, to tennis and spa treatment at the Fairmont Le Chateau Montebello. Best of all for the unplugged traveler, however, is the lack of cellular service and electricity. Two-way radios keep you in touch with the main gate and there is a pay-phone on the property, but the point of visiting Kenauk Nature is to enjoy the beautiful sights around you – the peaceful river and the lush forest.  No matter where you choose to unplug for a few days, try to pay attention to the changes you undergo. If you find yourself being able to focus for longer periods of time and, magically, you no longer have the urge to check your phone every couple of minutes, maybe unplugging is something to incorporate into your everyday schedule. Set aside some time each day to meditate, read a book or take a walk and give yourself a chance to slow down, process your day and take a breather.
