Ebola Screening at US Airports

Blog Posts, Travel Blog | 0 comments

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Center for Disease Control & Protection (CDC) will initiate screening on arrival to five US airports. The first airport to start arrival screening will be New York’s John F. Kennedy, Saturday Oct. 11th.

Screening will also start at the following airports New Jersey’s Newark, Chicago’s O’Hare, Washington Dulles and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson.

Here’s how the screening will work:

All passengers originating from Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone, the West African countries where the Ebola outbreak is occurring, will proceed to screening conducted by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Each passenger will be given:

health information about Ebola
information about symptoms to look for and what to do if symptoms develop
information for doctors if the traveler needs to seek medical attention during the upcoming days after arriving in the US.
Travelers will undergo screening measures that will include:

Having their temperature taken with a non-contact thermometer
Be observed for other symptoms of Ebola
If the traveler has a fever, other symptoms or has been exposed to Ebola, CBP will refer them to a CDC for further evaluation by a quarantine station pubic health officer.

CDC will determine:

Can the passenger continue their travel
If they should be taken to a hospital for evaluation, testing and treatment
Is referred to a local health department for further monitoring and support
It is important to keep in mind that arrival screening here in the US is part of a two-part screening process. The first part takes place at the airport in West Africa prior to travelers boarding their flight.

Since August, the CDC has been working with airlines, airports, ministries of health and other partners to develop exit screening and travel restrictions in countries affected by Ebola.
