Galapagos Island Trip Tips

Latin Trails provides a very special Galapagos experience both onboard the ship and with the tours.

But, let’s talk a little about travel insurance and planning a big trip such as this.  Let’s start with why travel insurance is so important. There are three reasons why you would need to insure your dream vacation.  And, it starts with Galapagos being an investment trip.

Travel Insurance

Trip cancellation – Cruises have very strict cancelation policies.  Refunds are prorated and based on the number of days before departure. Travel insurance helps you  sort through getting some benefit and assistance with coverage.

Trip delay – Cruises don’t wait, that’s the truth.  If there is a delay, you’ll want to have the option of being compensated and have solutions for the “what’s next” steps and how you can join the cruise after it has started.

Medical Emergencies – the Galapagos Islands are a far distance from the mainland.  If there is an emergency you will want to have a plan to get you to medical care, quickly.

When should you purchase travel insurance?  During your planning process.  And, for a list of plan options and to read more about travel insurance, visit our travel buddy, Allianz Travel Insurance.  We don’t leave home without Allianz Travel Insurance.  Visit their website for options and include travel insurance as part of the planning process for your vacation.   www.Allianztravelinsurance.com

Annita’s Tips for visiting the Galapagos Islands

Little Unknown facts about sailing in the Galapagos

  • Most Boats are small – there were no more than 16 passengers on my boat.  Many others are similar and the largest boats general have no more than 100 passengers.
  • No flushing toilet paper!  Deposit all paper in the trash can — Your cabin is checked and toilet clean several times throughout the day.  No problems with this procedure and it helps keep the ships functioning well and the environment clean.
  • No wifi and cell signals during most of your trip – contact love ones and let them know there will be no phone or wifi during the time you are away.
  • If you have balance and mobility issues – work on your balance before the trip.  Most trails are not cleared and you’ll be walking over large rocks, volcanic rocks, climbing uneven steps and pebbled paths.
  • Bring along a trekking pole for balance
  • Bring a comfortable pair of walking/hiking shoes and socks
  • Purchase a pair of sandals which are good for hiking/treking and are waterproof
  • Purchase a backpack made of a nylon type material which is lightweight and waterproof.  A lightweight pack is perfect for packing in a towel, change of shoes, sunscreen, lite snack
  • Take along a few snack foods – Annita took peanut butter crackers.  They are great for the days when you’re out hiking for four hours and you’ll need something for a little energy
  • Use bottle water for brushing your teeth – same with drinking water
  • Bring small bills – $100 bills are not accepted and with smaller bills are more likely to receive change in dollars
  • Credit Cards are not accepted onboard the ship – Cash is king!!
  • Bring along two swimsuits. There are lots of opportunities to get in the water.
  • The ship provides wetsuits for diving and snorkeling with a one time fee
  • Bring a swim suit coverup too.
  • And, a hat
  • A waterproof camera is a good suggestion even if you’re not planning to take underwater photos.  You are close to the water for most of the trip.

Requirements

Passport

Make copies of all your documents and email it to yourself

Note baggage allowances – flights to the Galapagos allow 50 lbs of luggage.   Keep weight in mind if you are bringing any of your own diving equipment.

There is a $100 Galapagos National Park fee – Latin Trails will handle paying this for you.  You’ll receive a voucher for the payment.  Keep it in a safe place so you can find it when requested.

Bring cash for tips. It is recommenced $25 per day for the crew; that’s per person and $10 per day for the tour guide

Check the weather before leaving.  It’s a good idea to bring a lightweight rain jacket.  Shawls for ladies work well for evenings too.

Don’t forget your sun screen. You are near the equator!!  And when in Quito it’s high altitude.
