Mother’s Day Travel Ideas

The Gift of Travel

Mother’s Day travel ideas the gift of travel. Now, that is my love language. Let’s go, we need to talk about Mother’s Day. It is coming up FAST. I have something so much better than a gift card and a Mother’s Day card from the grocery store. I am giving the full rundown on how to give Mom the gift of going somewhere.

Georgia and South Carolina are a good place to focus on. Because here’s the thing, you do not have to get on a plane to give someone an unforgettable experience. Some of the best travel memories I have ever made were within a couple of  hours of home. And for Mother’s Day, that is actually perfect. Less planning stress, more quality time.

Let’s start with –  Spa. Hotel. Retreat. Because some moms just want to be pampered; no itinerary, no agenda, just someone putting a warm towel on their face.

In Georgia, there is Barnsley Resort in Adairsville. This is a stunning property set on 3,000 acres in the North Georgia foothills, English manor style, gorgeous gardens, a world-class spa, and a vibe that feels like you have been transported somewhere in the English countryside. It is romantic without being over the top. Mom is going to feel like royalty. What’s extra special for moms wanting to bring their fur baby – it’s pet friendly.

The coast delivers. In South Carolina, the Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton is one of those places that stops you in your tracks the moment you arrive. It sits on 20,000 acres of Low Country land, Spanish moss, tidal creeks, Blue Herons just standing around like they own the place. The spa there is exceptional, and they do these amazing outdoor treatments where you are basically getting a massage surrounded by nature. For a mom who loves the South and loves beauty? This is it.

A little more accessible and budget-wise, Georgia’s Jekyll Island Club Resort is a treasure. It’s a historic 1886 property on Jekyll Island, one of Georgia’s gorgeous barrier islands, and the spa there is wonderful. Plus you have the beach, the trails, the whole island to explore. It is that perfect mix of history, relaxation, and coastal beauty. If mom wants to celebrate with the family, everyone has something fun to do.

Some moms want to be OUT there, hiking boots, fresh air, maybe sleeping under the stars. This is where Georgia absolutely shines. North Georgia is one of the most underrated outdoor destinations in the entire Southeast. If Mom loves to hike, take her to Cloudland Canyon State Park on Lookout Mountain, it is dramatic. Deep canyon, waterfalls, stone steps carved into the rock face. The views are jaw-dropping and there are trails for every fitness level, so the whole family can do this together.

There are moms who want the stars, but also want a bed. That is what Glamping was invented for. Georgia has some fantastic options. Aska Adventures in Blue Ridge, Georgia has gorgeous treehouse-style glamping with incredible mountain views. You get the firepit, the outdoor experience, the starry sky,  but you are not sleeping on the ground. You have a real bed, a private deck, maybe a hot tub. Perfect for a mom who wants the romance of camping without the back pain the next morning.

In South Carolina, Congaree National Park is a hidden gem, ancient cypress trees, wilderness trails, the magical firefly bioluminescence event in late spring that people travel from all over the world to see. If your mom is someone who appreciates something truly unique and rare in nature, this is the move. And if glamping is more her speed in SC, there are beautiful options near Beaufort in the Low Country, marsh views, kayaks at the doorstep. Gorgeous. Now that’s doing Mother’s Day with lots of memory-maker moments.

Sporty moms who love Golf and Tennis; we’re here for you too. South Carolina is basically a golfer’s paradise. Hilton Head Island alone has over 24 golf courses, and some of them are world-renowned. Harbour Town Golf Links has hosted the RBC Heritage PGA Tour event for decades. If Mom plays golf, Hilton Head is her Mecca. You book a long weekend there, she plays golf while others relax on the beach, and everyone comes back happy.

For tennis, Sea Island Resort on St. Simons Island, Georgia is extraordinary. Their tennis program is among the best in the country, they have resident pros, clinics, beautiful courts, and the whole package is set on one of Georgia’s most beautiful barrier islands. If Mom is a tennis player, this is a dream gift. And even if she’s not, St. Simons and close by Sea Island are both so stunning she will just be happy to be there.

Beach time. Let’s talk beach. On the Georgia side, Cumberland Island is in a class by itself, accessible only by ferry, no cars, wild horses roaming the beach, 17 miles of pristine sand. It is like stepping into another world. You pack a picnic, you stroll, you breathe, you disconnect completely. For a mom who needs genuine peace, I cannot think of a better gift. Tybee Island near Savannah is fantastic for a whole family beach day, a bit more lively, great food, fun vibes, close to all the magic of Savannah. Sapelo is always top choice, pristine beaches, culture and history all come together on an island where relaxing is the name of the game.

Antique shopping is a favorite of moms. Do you have a mom in your life who would rather spend a day picking through antiques than sitting on any beach.

Madison, Georgia is one of the best-kept antique secrets in the South. It is a perfectly preserved antebellum town, absolutely gorgeous, and the antique shops and boutiques there are wonderful. Combine that with a nice lunch and a stroll through the historic district and you have an absolutely perfect Mother’s Day. Also, Savannah’s Antique Mall and the shops along Broughton Street are wonderful. Savannah as a whole is a fantastic Mother’s Day trip for a mom who loves history, beauty, and great food in equal measure.

How about giving Mom an experience where she actually learns something new. Cooking classes, glass blowing  or painting, talk to me for a fun day of learning something new. This is my favorite category because these are the experiences people genuinely never forget. They become stories. You talk about them for years.

Cooking classes first,  because food is love, and learning to cook something beautiful together is one of the best things you can do with someone you love. The Mansion on Forsyth Park in Savannah does exceptional culinary experiences, Savannah also has a thriving food scene with several independent cooking studios offering classes in everything from Low Country cuisine to French pastry. Check it out soon, they book up fast around Mother’s Day.

Do not underestimate the joy of a beautifully facilitated painting experience. There are paint-and-sip studios everywhere, but for something more elevated, look into open air painting workshops in Georgia’s wine country up in Dahlonega or the mountain towns. You are outside, you have an easel, you are painting actual landscapes and vineyards with the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. It is genuinely magical. Some of the wineries themselves host painting sessions on their grounds. It is a whole gorgeous afternoon – just for mom!

My number one tip is: think about what makes your specific mom feel most like herself. Is she peaceful on a beach? Does she light up in a beautiful garden? Does she love to create things? Does she get excited when she finds a great antique? The destination matters, but it is really about matching the experience to the person. When you give someone a trip that says “I really see you and I planned this just for you,” that is the most powerful gift there is. And honestly? You do not need to go far. Georgia and South Carolina have more than enough magic. Start there.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas who are ready to make this year the best celebration ever! You deserve a whole trip. Go get it!

Thanks Emily. Me too. I’m not much of a cook since my husband does it all so well, but cooking classes are so much fun.
