Our destination on April 6 was the beautiful Georgia coastal island, Sapelo!  Once the home of Native Americans, the island has seen many owners come and go, many lifestyles from antebellum south with slave plantations, to playground of the northern wealthy.  But what the island continues to hold on to is it’s pristine beauty, peacefulness and culture of the proud Geechee/Gullah people.  The simple day-to-day life on Sapelo is what we all seek at one time or another.

Click on the link above and listen to the archive show as we take you on a tour that will go back in time and bring you to today where there are opportunities for family fun, peaceful get-aways and a sportsman paradise.  Sapelo with its pristine beauty does not disappoint.

It’s a favorite place of Doc Bill and Annita.  They will introduce you to this wonderland and invite you to come and visit…. Sapelo, the jewel on the Georgia coast.

Author of Sapelo Island and his many other books highlight the Georgia coast.  Buddy is a native of Savannah and McIntosh County, Georgia.  He has generational roots going back to the 1700s with family roots along the salt marshes, tidal mudflats and creeks along the Georgia coast where he also spent his childhood.  Not surprising, growing up along the low country he developed a strong interest in local and regional history.
During his time working as editor of his hometown news paper, Darien News, he began his historical research and writing about the region with the Early Days on the Georgia Tidewater as his first major work.  Since his first book, Buddy has written 16 books about history, nature and maritime shipping & trade.  His research and subsequent books have made him the “go to person” for history about the area.
He has served on the Board of Curators of the Georgia Historical Society, served as president of the Lower Altamaha Historical Society (Darien) and the Richmond Hill Historical Society.  He is also a member of the Georgia Historical Society, the United States Naval Institute and Savannah Council of the United State Navy League and has received various awards and honors.   A true historian; you know there are many stories he is yet to tell.

Author of Sapelo Island’s Hog Hammock and manager of the Hog Hammock library.  Michele’s love of Sapelo began when visiting the island with her sister.  Just like so many who have visited the island, she fell in love with not only the natural beauty of the island, but also the proud Geechee/Gullah people and their history.
Not surprising she would write a book about Hog Hammock.   Michele’s resume includes her extensive work in journalism as editor with various newspapers in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina where she has received awards and honors.
Michele’s work with community relations and community development as part of the Hog Hammock library brings engaging and interesting programming to the island residents.  Michele is married to Larry Johnson, a Sapelo family with a long history of living on Sapelo in Johnson Hammock.  Her book about Hog Hammock includes historic photographs that capture the essence of the community and will give you a first hand view of the people of Hog Hammock, connected through history, culture, family and community.
