No need to travel far for historic treasures or one of a kind exhibits …. they are all types of special Georgia attractions right outside our front door.

Filmore East Room
The Allman Brothers Band Museum at the Big House in Macon, showcases the place where their At Filmore East album was conceived.   The Filmore East Room located in the museum offers an opportunity to see the room where they would jam and rehearse.  Other songs cnceived in this room are Hot ‘Lanta and Gov’t Mule.  There is also memorabilia from the original band and the  days with ABB.

Gallery of Presidential Letters
Located at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, photographs and letters give us an inside view into the communication of some of our U.S. Presidents.  The Booth Western Art Museum is an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute. Open since Aug. 2003 it is the second largest art museum in Georgia and houses the largest permanent exhibition space for Western art in the country.  And, while checking out the presidential letters, you’ll find three to five temporary exhibits here each year. During this time of election results …. It’s a look at the American story – through presidential letters.

Bartow History Museum
Go back in time to the real “ol’ school” when the classroom was a one-room schoolhouse. The Bartow History Museum documents the history of northwest Georgia’s Bartow County, spanning more than 200 years.  There are a variety of exhibits that tell the stories of the area.  From the Cherokee life and removal, Civil War strife and lifestyles.

Margaret Mitchell House
Tour her apartment where Gone With the Wind was written and you’ll see her desk, furnishings and get a feel of what her life was like.  Guided tours of the house are offered with details about her life and writing the novel.  One can marvel at the appartment which she called “the dump” and see how this museum has captured not only her life but the way of life during that time.

Savannah History Museum
“Life is like a box of chocolates!” Visit the museum and view the bench where Forrest Gump quoted his momma’s philosophy about life. The movie prop is on display.  But, this is just a little bit of what you’ll find at the Savannah History Museum.  Delve into Savannah’s very colorful past.  The museum is located in an old passenger station of the Central of Georgia Railroad.  The building is a National Historic Landmark which is a prize to see, especially for train enthusiasts where you can see an 1890 steam locomotive.  Make sure and carve out enough time to see the over 10,000 artifacts.  The Carriage owned by the family of Girl Scots founder Juliette Gordon Lowe, an antique cotton gin and artifacts from the Civil War, Revoluntionary War and oth more.

Roosevelt’s Little White House
A State historic site that Franklin D. Roosevelt built in 1932 while governor of New York prior to being inaugurated as president. The Little White House is located in Warm Springs. Many have wondered “Why Warm Springs, Georgia?”  Roosevelt came to Warm Springs in 1924 hoping to find a cure for this paralysis due to polio.  He felt that swimming in the warm springs waters, said to bring not only comfort, but also a miracle cure. It did bring improvment and the Warm Springs rehabilitation center continues today.

He developed many New Deal Programs (such as the Rural Electrification Administration based upon his experiences in the small town of Warm Springs.
